On September 18th the Silk Way Rally finished in Sochi – the capital of the Winter Olympic Games 2014
Before the finish teams crossed the final and very original special. The rally route crosses the Main Caucasian ridge, passes two heavy passes and reaches the Black Sea coast of the south of Russia. Stage 8 was stretched on 17 km upwards, in mountains along the channel of the pure river Shakhe, on the stony valley between beautiful mountains and woods. The race has not come yet to the end, and all crews should be prepared to the serious struggle in other conditions, because the covering of this special is on 100 % stony, an average and large river pebble, the big boulders, gullies on both river banks, the track is less visible and also lost on this stony and multicolored carpet. Moreover, a winding channel of the fast mountain river which competitors have to cross, at least, 15 times. For crossing it is necessary to foresee the shallows where it is easy to “drown” the vehicle on imprudence. This is a test for reliability of vehicles.
Maurer-MAN-Motorsport-Performance team (MMMP) - pilot Franz Echter, navigator Detlef Ruf, technician Hans Balleis and MAN technical crew that supported race truck MAN TGS WW 18.480 4x4 successfully finished the last stage of the Silk Way rally. MMMP took the fifth place at the general classification of the rally. The head of Motorsport department of "MAN Avtomobili Rossiya" and MMMP team manager Denis Maslennikov said: “We are very glad to reach this result. Of course, our position could be better but we have lost 25 min during the previous stage due to the damaged wheel. It interfered to reach our main goal. I am sure, our position is good for the first step of MMMP team. The truck was constructed in a very short time. We did not have time for tests. The "Silk Way" rally was the best test for MAN TGS WW 18.480 4x4. We did not have any seriously damages”.
Pilot Franz Echter said: “We just have reached the finish in Sochi. We are here thanks to our European and Russian partners, they supported MMMP team. I would like to say our personally thanks to the head of Motorsport department in Russia Denis Maslennikov and his team. We could not finish without team cooperation and their great support. We thank Toni Maurer company and Karl Maurer. Karl Maurer did a great job: he constructed our race truck MAN TGS WW 18.480 4x4 in a very short time. The race truck showed big potential and reliability.
We will remember still for a long time the most unexpected moments of the "Silk Way" rally. We were surprised by new regions, landscapes and kinds of various geographical zones of the European part of Russia. After all now we learn a simple true that in Europe, though it will seem fantastic, there is a desert, a huge sandy plateau, difficult dunes, infinite steppes with the most complicated navigation. The team co-driver Detlef Ruf did a great job. He is a professional and has been in Dakar many times.
We hope, the "Silk Way" rally will start next year also and we will come to Russia”.
The "Silk Way" rally was finished and MMMP team received Rally souvenir during the gala-dinner in Krasnaya Polyana. The Silk Way Rally project director, honored master of sports, honored coach of Russian Federation Semen Yakubov and Dakar Series director Frederic Lequien congratulated MMMP team on the fifth place.
